On this page you will find blog entries from our V1 camp from summer 2018. Enjoy posts written by teachers but mostly by campers themselves! Enjoy a small window into our summer experience at NxJ.
First we went bowling and we had lunch there. My group was Zach, Brendan, Paul and Miss Carey. Brendan did really good and so did I. Brendan got 5 spares and I got 1 strike and 15 spares and Paul was killing the game but one time I beat him. Then we went to Nat Geo Ocean Odyssey. In it they had a really cool escalator and we went into a really cool floor. When you step on the floor it makes a water blast and we also saw a turtle. We went deeper into the ocean and then we saw coral and we saw the kelp forest. We saw a squid battle and one of the squids shed one of the squid's blood and then we watched a 3D movie and a whale ate us.
ZACH: On Wednesday we went to the New York Hall of Science. One of my favorite things I saw was a hologram. You try to touch the spring but your fingers go through. The spring is really just a picture reflecting off a mirror. Another thing I really liked was the Hall of Mirrors. They turn you into all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some make you fat, some short, some lean, and some crazy tall. And some make you very, very ugly. Some multiply, some disappear, and some make your head float.
JACKSON: Hello, blog. On Wednesday we went to the New York Hall of Science. My favorite part was the "Lego center" well...that's what I call it. So I've been here before and I realized Legos is not the only thing they do. They did other things too like building a ping-pong machine, etc. But we did Legos. I enjoyed it because I'm really good at Legos! Only with Jing. Well I could build without her but I'm better with her because 1. Jing is super good at finding Legos and 2. She is so encouraging! So I'm super good at Legos, if you ask for my opinion then...it's awesome!!!
On Friday we went on the ferry and we drove a car and waited in a long line and finally got on the boat. We went to the top of the boat. I was surprised that the boat went pretty fast. It took a few stops and then we finally got to DUMBO. We walked right to lunch at Shake Shack. We ate then we went to the carousel and Miss Carey said "Who wants to go?" and all the little kids raided their hands, and all the big kids went to play on the grassy fields. We made a really good garden and then all the little kids came.
Wednesday is always field trip day, and our Little Jumpers were organized into two different groups. The older kids went to the Museum of Natural History and saw dinosaurs, fossils, plants, minerals, rocks, and meteorites. Everything was old except the gift shop.
Unseen Oceans by Jackson
Hello, Blog. Today we went to the Natural History Museum and I'm going to tell you about the "Unseen Oceans". It might sound like a movie but it's a walk-through. I liked it but there isn't much to see. They had levers you could pull, buttons to push, and games to play. My favorite game was a submarine. You have to follow red arrows to complete your mission! It's super fun!!!
IMax Amazon Adventure by Zain
I was racing down a hallway, made a turn and I was lost. My group came and directed me to the theater. I took a seat and the movie began. It was about two scientists trying to find out how species change. They knew there was no better place for that but in the Amazon. The scientists built a house. They then split up. One took the northern regions while the other stayed in the south. One was in the Amazon for eleven years.
Planet Earth by Miles
We saw a lot of things at the Museum of Natural History but my favorite was the hurricane monitor. You can change the time period when the hurricane happened and we picked Hurricane Sandy because my house was in it. It's predicting that more hurricanes are going to happen because our water is getting warmer.
The following is an interview of Chloe. By Jackson.
Today I am interviewing my friend Chloe. She joined the camp yesterday! First, I asked her a really wacky and funny question my best friend came up with:
How did you get to this time period?
I was born then grew up.
What a simple answer!! Awesome!
What do you enjoy most about this camp?
I like swimming.
I like swimming too but I prefer Minecraft.
What would you change about this camp?
I was shocked! I love basketball but not as much as Minecraft!
Are turtles overrated? Underrated? Properly rated?
Stay tuned for more interviews between campers.
Monday was a great day back to Little NxJumpers after the weekend. Last Friday we (well not me, I had the stomach bug!) were lucky enough to walk to the Union Square Farmer's Market to check out the produce. Each camper picked out a favorite fruit/vegetable. Speaking of food, our cooking teacher Ms. Laura has been awesome in helping us expand out palates! On Monday we all worked together to make buternut squash mac and cheese. We all LOVED it and have the recipe here for you to try at home. At the end of camp we hope to compile a recipe book from our time here!
Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese
1 Tbs. Butter
2 cups panko breadcrumbs
½ cup parmesan
¼ tsp. kosher Salt
¼ tsp. black Pepper
4 Tbs. butter
1 shallot, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
4 Tbs. Flour
4 cups Whole Milk
10 oz. Extra-Sharp Cheddar Cheese, shredded
1 ½ cups cooked butternut squash puree
½ tsp. kosher salt
¼ tsp. black pepper
Penne Pasta (pre cook and rinse)
1. Melt 1 Tbs. butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add panko, salt and pepper. Cook until toasty about 2 minutes, add the parmesan and stir to combine.
2. Add 4 Tbs. butter to empty skillet and melt over medium heat.
3. Add shallot and garlic and cook until softened, about 1 to 2 minutes.
4. Add flour and cook, whisking constantly, for 1 minute, until no dry flour remains.
5. Whisk in milk and bring to a boil.
6. Turn off the heat and add cheese, squash, salt and pepper. Stir until cheese is melted. Add in the cooked pasta and stir to thoroughly coat.
7. Top with crunchy breadcrumb mixture
On Wednesday we visited the Liberty Science Center, home of dino digs, bubble walls, a menagerie of odd creatures from naked mole rats to Goliath birdeater tarantulas, a playground suspended in air, and the largest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere, so big that two different kids asked, “Are we inside the earth?”
Our cub reporters are here to give us the inside scoop:
Dino Dig by Zain
I was racing down the hallway to Dino Dig--the best part of my day. At first I was digging at a random spot until I found eggs. Then I saw my friends working on the mother lizard. It was huge. I then raced to them and started to brush off sand. I finished in time to see Miles and Jackson digging a T.Rex. I went over to help but Jackson didn’t let me help so I went to a Triceratops skull and started to dig.
Wildlife Adventure by Miles
In the Liberty Science Museum there were a lot of exhibits but my favorite was the wildlife station. It was like a world course of different types of animals so you had to go through the squirrel and you had to balance on a log. Another is the flamingo. You had to go through tall grass. Another is the spider. You had to balance on a rope shaped like a spider web. And another is a frog. You had to hop to the end of the wildlife station. I liked it because it had to do with animals.
Oceans: Our Blue Planet by Jackson
Today we went to the Liberty Science Center. It was epic! And I’m going to tell you about the 3D Ocean movie. It was my favorite if you’re asking for my opinion because I saw two turtles in the movie! And guess what?! Turtles are my favorite animal!!! It was also really interesting because we watched a tuskfish. It uses tools to get its food first by using its teeth to dig. Once he finds a clam he grabs it with his teeth then brings it to his “kitchen” (bowl-shaped coral). Then he smashes the clam on a bump which cracks it open! Finally he eats it. Oh and did I mention that they live in coral reefs? Next it talks about the arctic ocean...I think. And it tells you that temperatures are rising really fast so animals are having a hard time surviving because of the melted ice, like walruses because they don’t have that much shelter. Imagine you were a walrus with no shelter...yikes!
Minecraft by Jackson
We had Minecraft on a Monday. I thought we only had Minecraft on a Tuesday, but it turns out Minecraft is on Monday and Friday, awesome! Today when I was playing Minecraft I completed the house, except the furniture like crafting tables, ovens, chests, etc., so I started to work on the garden. I tried to change the diamond to dirt, but it took too long so I asked the Minecraft teacher for help and they did it in seconds! After that I started to work on the path. I made it out of cobblestone, but I changed my mind. I wanted it to be made out of stone brick! It looked much better! Next I started to work on the fences around my house! It was a nice touch! But while I was working they froze us! I was upset because I was so close to finishing one wall!! But I guess I’ll finish next time!
Basketball by Matthew
We went to basketball in Tito’s car and we practiced assists. My partner was Miles and then we did a game. My teammate was Jackson and then he shot up and he scored and he did it again and then my assist and shot again and he scored and he did it again and Jackson shot and did it and the score was 4 to 4.
Swimming by Zain
In the afternoon it was baking. We went in the car (which took 15 minutes). We all jumped into tents to get changed. My group jumped in the pool. It took a really really really long time to get used to the cold. We did catch up and a lot more. To be continued...
Zain’s Birthday by Miles
Yesterday was Zain’s birthday. He had two extra cupcakes. The cupcake flavor were peanut butter and jam, rainbow and Oreo and cookie dough, and mint chocolate.
This morning, I was surprised there was Minecraft on a Monday (maybe Julia just messed up the schedule?!). The mystical, legendary Miles surprised us by joining camp today. For those of you who love jobs... great news! We got jobs! Each job involves ninjas (the good kind). Tomorrow we'll post a picture of the job chart. We also had English and Mandarin, cooking, basketball, and swimming.
It turns out we did have Minecraft - I was surprised, but I'm not complaining.
